CARES Act/HEERF Emergency Grant Fund

TheÌýCoronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic SecurityÌý(CARES)ÌýActÌýisÌýfederal legislation thatÌýestablished and funded the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF), which has provided the Ã山ǿ¼éÌýwith $2.9 million forÌýemergency financial aid grants to studentsÌýto help cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due toÌýtheÌýcoronavirus.Ìý

The Department of EducationÌýhas established eligibility guidelines that students must meet in order to beÌýeligible forÌýan award.ÌýÌýÌý

  • Students must have filed aÌýFree Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)Ìýfor the 19/20 academic yearÌýand metÌýTitle IV eligibilityÌýrequirementsÌý
  • Students must have been enrolled in a degree seeking program atÌýÃ山ǿ¼éÌýÌý

Grants rangeÌýfrom $200 to $800Ìýdepending upon enrollmentÌýstatusÌýandÌýPell GrantÌýeligibility.ÌýStudents displaced from University housing wereÌýawardedÌýan extraÌý$200.ÌýÌýÌý

Under Department of Education guidelines, someÌýstudents are not eligible for an awardÌýsuch asÌýinternational students, DACA students,Ìýstudents who took all distance educationÌýand students who were not meeting general Title IV eligibilityÌýrequirements.ÌýÌýÌý

The CARES Act doesÌýnotÌýallow the University to apply funds toÌýaÌýstudent’sÌýpast due balance.Ìý

  1. Do I have to repay a CARES Act grant?ÌýThese funds are a grant, not a loan. There is no requirement to repay the grant funds.Ìý
  2. Will this funding reduce my financial aid?ÌýThis is a one-time grant that does not reduce financial aid.
  3. How will the CARES grant impact my taxes?ÌýAs with all financial assistance, federal grants received will have separate and unique tax consequences for your individual federal tax return. Visit theÌýÌýfor more informationÌý
